March 14th – Unreal Worship

What did Jesus mean when he said that the only kind of worship in which God is encountered is worship in Spirit and in truth? That word ‘truth’ in the Bible means more than the opposite of falsehood. It is a word which means ‘what is ultimately real’. God does not deal in unreal worship. It never reaches him. Humans love unreal worship. It is so undemanding, and going through the motions makes them feel better. Unreal worship is asking for things God has already said he cannot countenance. Unreal worship is to seek his forgiveness which we are not prepared to pass on by forgiving others.It is when we put our worries before him and then take them away with us. It is when we want the world changed, but not our own crooked little self-centred hearts. Unreal worship can sing great hymns splendidly, say superbly worded prayers, and even enjoy the experience, but never be broken before God.
Worship is real when we mean it. When we are wide open before the light which explores every dirty corner, and dusty, locked cupboard in our inner lives. Real worship is letting go, and letting God do his business with us. It is face-to-face encounter with the Holy Living God. Real worship is not a visit to Father Christmas; it is not to read out our prayer shopping lists, but a willingness to receive what is on his heart for us. It is to open ourselves fully to God, for as we open up all our windows and doors in praise, he pours in like the fresh air and sunshine. The doors of praise we open are the very same doors he uses to come into us. To worship in truth means – to engage in a real encounter with God.
One ship drives east, and another west, with the self-same winds that blow;
It is the set of the sails and not the gales which tell us the way to go.
(Ella Wheeler Wilcox)
I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders.
I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.
Psalm 9: 1-2
A Prayer; Lord God, forbid that we ever come to you, our minds and hearts closed – but rather with our sails set high and wide open to the winds of your Spirit.
Now read: Nehemiah from Chapter 12:27 to Chapter 13.
