July 19th – Who is He?

John’s Gospel has been a focus of our daily thoughts for the last couple of days, and we were dwelling on the enormous importance John puts on the word ‘believe’, by which he means total trust, or total faith. It is as if when you say to John ‘I believe in Jesus’, he is likely to say ‘What do you believe in Jesus?’, because he records some of the things the people of his day believed about Jesus (and just like today, our beliefs tell the world more about us than they do about God). Some folk said then, as they do now:
“He is a good man” , others “No, he is deceiving the people”.Some people said “Surely this man is the prophet”. Others said “He is the Christ ..”
These and other beliefs about Jesus are set out in just one chapter John, Chapter 7, so he is concerned that we believe the right things about Jesus. What are the right things? Again, John Chapter 20 v. 31.
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God
The word ‘Christ’ is the Greek word for the Hebrew title ‘Messiah’. In English it is ‘THE LORD’S ANOINTED’, and it refers to the rightful King of Israel who would stand before God in the name of Israel and before the people in the name of God: thus exercising both priest and prophetic ministries and holding together a Holy God who is just and good on the one hand, and a most reluctant, disobedient people on the other.
Who is the Messiah, the Christ, the Lord’s Anointed King – not of Israel alone but of the whole world – by nature, human, but by descent the very Son of God? Who is this Being – this God/man? The simple answer is “Jesus”, that’s who. Now do you believe that about him? Hear the words of a man at first most sceptical about Jesus from Nazareth .
Then Nathaniel declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel”. John 1:49
A Prayer:
“Jesus, we enthrone you: we proclaim you our King
Standing here in the midst of us, we lift you up with our praise.”
Now read Matthew 16: 13-28.

Thought 4 The Day

I believe in Christianity as I believe in the sun – not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
