February 4th – There Must Be More To Life Than This !

I read this recently:”God not only forgives the sinner, but he fills and satisfies the saint.” Why do Christians behave as though God’s saving acts are only meant to start us on the right road, and not to sustain, excite and empower us along the way?
Today, be sure of this, the fullness of the Holy Spirit is for all and for every Christian. What pains everyone most, even unbelievers, is unsatisfied Christians – empty believers. No, I don’t mean that they should aim at being self-satisfied believers, but God-satisfied: Not merely filled with human happiness, but with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Now, am I asking for the moon? The short answer is “Yes, but much more than the moon.” There is a kind of emotional religion which lives only on feelings, which merely exists between one exciting event and the next, which drops out when faced with a spiritual desert. Living for religious kicks is not life in the Spirit. But what the Acts of the Apostles describes all through: what Jesus promised to all who came to Him is being filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1: 4-5 and 8)
On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptised with water, but in a few days you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Lord, for me now, and whoever is listening to or reading these words, we say come Holy Spirit, come, and take control, and do with me as you will in Jesus name.
From a Prayer of St. Augustine, A.D. 354: “Thee would we praise without ceasing. Thou callest us to delight in They praise, for Thou hast made us for Thyself and our hearts find no rest until they rest in Thee.”
Now read Ecclesiastes Chapter 2, and underline v.11.
