February 15th – The A.B.C. of Prayer

Most Christians admit that they find praying difficult, so any help they can get is welcome. Mind you, the best training in prayer, is praying. Nothing works like doing it. Nothing teaches like practice. Nevertheless so many complain that their mind wanders when they should be concentrating on prayer. All right then: Let’s offer some feeble advice. “Sit facing an empty chair, as close as you can get to it” said the old minister “and imagine Jesus is sitting there just a couple of feet away, and talk to him, and listen every now and then to hear what he has to say to you”.
“Yes, but what do I say to him?”
“Whatever is in your heart: say what you mean, and mean what you say, and if you want a framework, then try A.C.T.S.”
“Acts?”
“Yes. Four letters:
A for Adoration, when you just admire God and praise him for all he is and all he does.
C is for Confession. Admit what you know is wrong in you and ask for his forgiveness and strength to overcome it in future.
T is for Thanksgiving. You’ve always got something to be thankful for, so say so.
S stands for Supplication, or asking God to help others whom you name.” Well, it may not solve your prayer problems, but at least try it.
St. Mark tells us that: The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said “He’s dead”. But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately “Why couldn’t we drive it out? He replied “This kind can come out only by prayer.” Mark 9: 26-29
A Prayer guide of Apostle Paul: Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Messiah Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit’s fire. I Thessalonians 5: 16-19
Now read another Prayer Guide. You probably will not be able to read it all in one sitting. It is the longest of the Psalms, 119. It is an acrostic: a poem in which each line of every stanza begins with the same letter of the Hebrew Alphabet in turn, as it goes from Aleph to Taw (to us ‘A to Z’)
