May 29th – Lord, teach us to pray

I don’t know about you, but from the moment I began to express some interest in the Christian faith, everyone told me, expected me;virtually demanded that I pray. ‘All Christians pray, don’t they?, so that includes you.’
Again I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a guilt complex about it ever since. You see no one ever told me how to pray.I heard sermons and addresses on praying better, and more often I heard experienced Christians talking about the way they spend an hour in prayer when 5 minutes completely wore me out. I thought, well when I get into a Christian college it will be easier, there’ll be more encouragement and time to pray.Guess what? There wasn’t and it wasn’t.
When I became a minister I discovered that everyone thought I spent hours in prayer every day, and I didn’t – and what was worse, I found that being a minister did not come with a direct hot line to God. In fact, no one taught me the discipline of prayer, so after all these years, I’m still a beginner. My most used prayer is “Lord teach us to pray”.

Jesus always knew what his Heavenly Father wanted to do, and so I’m tempted to say that prayer was easy for Him. The disciples who lived with Jesus for over two and a half years saw Him at prayer, and asked Him to teach them. He gave them a framework on which to grow their prayers, but when He asked them to stay awake and pray with Him they blew it and all fell asleep, worn out. So even they had problems!
If all we Christians honestly and accurately recorded how much time we spend in prayer we’d all be utterly depressed. But don’t despair.God knows us, our relationship with Him does not depend on us but on Him, and He neither slumbers nor sleeps -nor is he ever too busy to meet us.
Jesus said:
“Your Father knows what you need before you ask him”. Matthew 6:8

A Prayer:
Teach us to pray, O Lord, in honesty, so that we say what we mean, and mean what we say.
Teach us to pray, O Lord, in particular, so that we do not bring vague, generalities to you.
Teach us to pray, O Lord, in humility, lest we talk to ourselves, and listen not to you.

Now read Matthew Chapter 6.
